The Bravery - “Bad Sun”

This is an interesting little track I ran across the other day. It has a simple beat and a little whistling which I normally think it is a bad idea but it works here. The lyrics though are what is appealing here. I tend to be a skeptic on the concept of soul mates and other perfection ideas that sound warm and fuzzy but aren’t very pragmatic.

Not to go off on a tangent but there is a humorous scene in the HBO series “Flight of the Concords” where Jermaine starts dating Sally and says that she is “The One” to which Brett replies that he thought Jermaine said his last girlfriend was the one and Jermaine says something like, “Yeah, she was another one” and so on. If you haven’t seen the series then you at least get the idea but it is very funny and worth checking out.

Anyway back to “Bad Sun”, if a person where to find a soul mate then this would be the kind of song that would be appropriate since the reality of life is that people are flawed individuals. I always like when a popular notion is turned upside down for perspective so here instead of two perfect people being destined to be together, the reality is best that can happen is for two people to have the same flaws and luckily happen upon each other. If I find a soulmate, this may very well be our song.

We are liars like the summertime
Like the spring we are such fools
Like fall we are false prophets
And like winter we are cruel

I don’t know what’s wrong with us
They just made us this way
There’s a hole in you and me that pulls us together

And I don’t know where we belong
I think we grew under a bad sun
I know we’re not like everyone
You and me we grew under a bad sun

Every day you bring me pain and we savor it like rain
We hold it on our tongues, just like wine
Someday back when we were young I guess something just went wrong
The two of us are hung from the same twisted rope

And I don’t know where we belong
I think we grew under a bad sun
I know we’re not like everyone
You and me we grew under a bad sun
