Sometimes I want to break shit….. like people’s faces :)
So I just got through watching UFC 84 and I was thinking about what music I would pick for my intro if I were a bad ass mixed martial artist. My first thought is to go old school with something from my youth that fired me up and there is really only one song that comes to mind, “More Human than Human” by White Zombie.
I would put this track in any top ten list. I wouldn’t care if it was a list of the top ten bible school sing alongs. That’s how good this shit is and I’m not really a metal head (actually kind of a hippie) but this has always been one of my favorites. I saw White Zombie live back in the day and for what it is worth, I have never seen more fucking freaks and psychos in a mosh pit than there were at that show.
Anyway, this track screams bad ass but I’ll post the lyrics to prove it in case some of you degenerate bastards don’t believe me.
Yeah, I am the astro-creep,
A demolition style hell american freak - yeah
I am the crawling dead,
A phantom in a box, shadow in your head - say
Acid suicide - freedom of the blast,
Read the fucker lies - yeah
Scratch off the broken skin,
Tear into my heart,
Make me do it again
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah-
More human than human
More human than human
More human than human
More human than human
More human than human
More human than human
Yeah, I am the jigsaw man
I turn the world around with a skeleton hand - say
I am electric head,
A cannibal core,
A television said - yeah
Do not victimize,
Read the motherfucker-psychoholic lies - yeah
Into a psychic war,
I tear my soul apart and I eat it some more
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah-
More human than human
More human than human
More human than human
More human than human
More human than human
More human than human
Yeah, I am the ripper man,
A locomotion mind,
Love american style -yeah
I am the nexus one,
I want more life,
Fucker I ain’t done - yeah
More human than human
More human than human
More human than human
More human than human
More human than human
More human than human
More human than human
More human than human
American Idol Finale Review
Ok, I am late getting started on this so it will be very half assed. You know, like my other posts. Anyway, on to my review.
David Cook and ZZ Top sounded awesome. Michael Johns sounded great. I can picture buying a CD from either of them. I also thought David Cook was thriving now that the pressure is off. That kinda surprised me because I didn’t think he was really bothered by it. Now I think he was really psyching himself out.
David Cook will be famous. He picked amazing arrangements of some great songs that were extremely popular with the current music climate. His talent is in his voice and his ability to spot a hit. He is a very smart guy. He was also right last night. If he had sung one of his previous songs from the show, Simon would have given him all kinds of shit. Simon is a hypocrite and makes my wonderful pregnant wife seem rational.
David Archuleta. I like the guy. Hell, I would let him bang my sister. I wouldn’t buy a CD from him though.
EDIT: The guys have sounded good all night during their group songs. The girls sound terrible except for Kristy Lee Cook.
EDIT 2: I was extremely looking forward to George Michael singing. It made me very sad though. I can’t decide if he really looked old or we are all just aging. Not the song I wanted to hear from him either.
EDIT 3: Paula may sometimes look drunk, but her mind was sharp. She was spot on there.
EDIT 4: SIMON APOLOGIZED
EDIT 5: YES!!!! DAVID COOK!! YES AMERICA, YOU GOT IT RIGHT!!!!!
Iron and Wine - “Passing Afternoon”
I was watching the season finale of House tonight and the song in the closing scene before the credits really caught my ear. It really flows with my current musical loves. The song is by Iron and Wine and it is titled “Passing Afternoon”.
I have listened to it a few times on Rhapsody tonight but I am gonna have to sleep on the full meaning of it. Beautiful song but damn this isn’t the kinda song you want to listen to on a rainy day. I’ll definitely be filing Iron and Wine away to check out more, but tonight it is sleep.
Here are the lyrics:
There are times that walk from you like some passing afternoon
Summer warmed the open window of her honeymoon
And she chose a yard to burn but the ground remembers her
Wooden spoons, her children stir her Bougainvillea bloomsThere are things that drift away like our endless, numbered days
Autumn blew the quilt right off the perfect bed she made
And she’s chosen to believe in the hymns her mother sings
Sunday pulls its children from the piles of fallen leavesThere are sailing ships that pass all our bodies in the grass
Springtime calls her children until she let’s them go at last
And she’s chosen where to be, though she’s lost her wedding ring
Somewhere near her misplaced jar of Bougainvillea seedsThere are things we can’t recall, Blind as night that finds us all
Winter tucks her children in, her fragile china dolls
But my hands remember hers, rolling around the shaded ferns
Naked arms, her secrets still like songs I’d never learnedThere are names across the sea, only now I do believe
Sometimes, with the window closed, she’ll sit and think of me
But she’ll mend his tattered clothes and they’ll kiss as if they know
A baby sleeps in all our bones, so scared to be alone
Groove Coverage - “Far Away From Home”
Okay, I’m going to fess up to my love for techno. One day, I was looking for a song to pull me out of my zombie like state at work and ran across a “Various Artists” compilation for techno. That led me to Cascada that eventually led me to Groove Coverage.

Groove Coverage is a German Euro-trance band. They have done a couple of covers, one that you might have heard of was Alice Cooper’s Poison. Far Away From Home is actually a kick ass song, that has a good melodic tune to it:
Verse 1
I’m loving living every single day but sometimes I feel so….
I hope to find a little peace of mind and I just want to know.
Bridge:
And who can heal those tiny broken hearts, and what are we to be.
Where is home on the milky way of stars, I dry my eyes again.
Chorus:
In my dreams I’m not so far away from home,
What am I in a world so far away from home,
All my life all the time so far away from home,
Without you I’ll be so far away from home.
Verse 2
If we could make it trough the darkest Night we’d have a brighter day.
the world I see beyond your pretty eyes, makes me want to stay.
Verse 3
I count on you, no matter what they say, cause love can find it’s time.
I hope to be a part of you again, baby let us shine.
The Flaming Lips Explanations Series
I’m going to assume that since you are reading this that you have more than a passing interest in music. By chance, I ran across a really interesting gem on Rhapsody last night that was like finding a crumpled up $20 bill in an old coat pocket. I own most of the Flaming Lips albums so I already have them in my library and never really have needed to pull them up on Rhapsody but when I was clicking around and checking out new music I noticed a cross reference to the Flaming Lips that had “explanations” after the album name.
Naturally, my curiosity took over so I clicked on through to the bands landing page and found my little pot of music gold. The band has an intro before each track that gives a little background information and insight into the track. This was done for several albums including, Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots and At War with the Mystics. For someone such as me who goes hardcore nerd or not at all when I enjoy something, this was really interesting stuff.
For example, the band talks about how the track, “The Yeah Yeah Yeah Song” seems to be a favorite among children and they always either side with the yeah yeah yeah side or the no no no side. Obviously this doesn’t make much sense if you haven’t heard the track but it is very insightful into human nature from the honesty of a child and I’m sure the catchy tunes don’t hurt the appeal to the kiddies either. Another interesting tidbit from this track is that people often ask the band if the track is about the band “Yeah Yeah Yeah’s” which seems odd but just goes to show how people make music their own by interpretation regardless of intention or accuracy.
So if you have more than a passing interest in the band then this is definitely worth checking out the next time you fell like putting the head phones on and listening to a Flaming Lips album. By the way, Rhapsody has some fucked up genre titles, Flaming Lips are Noise Pop. What the hell is that?
Also, I saw a documentary on the band called The Flaming Lips: Fearless Freaks that is a must see for any of their fans. It chronicles their history and the highs and lows of the band’s career.
Apocalyptica
I’m not a Metalicca fan…. but I used to dig their music until they became a bunch of 80+ year old New Jersey broads bitching about kids running through their yards and pissing on their flowers. Lest I digress further, the reason I got my lazy ass off the couch to blog (for the record I was just gonna tweet but I’ve had a little sauce and was feeling gabby) wasn’t to share my views of the shot out shit that is Metallica. It was to praise Apocalyptica who were obviously into Metallica back in the day as well.
They made their first appearance onto the music scene by covering Metallica although not in the college bar band kind of way. No, Apocalyptica uses a little something the classical musicians call a cello which is an extremely creative idea although the album title is wee bit less creative, “Apocalyptica Plays Metallica by Four Cellos”. Forgive them the title though and you will find a very interesting bit of music.
Go find whatever track you want, maybe “One” or “Unforgiven”….Oh, perhaps you’re a “Enter Sandman” kind of fool….what? no you’re a real freak, you’re into a little “Wherever I May Roam”. It all good, they got ya covered. It is a fucking awesome little wrinkle into the world of music that is worth checking out.
Now they are doing some new tracks and collaborations with their cellos and other instruments that are pretty sweet as well. I am really liking the title track off their new album, “Worlds Collide”. For you old school rockers that remember the days when album art was a fucking craft then you will appreciate the album cover as well. For you younger dudes, before music became a god damn karaoke contest it was about booze, drugs, loose women, and album art….and sometimes breaking shit.

Drag The River
Drag The River is what Wicked Playlist is about. Finding good new music that you may not have ever heard before. I had never head them. I just happened across the self-described Alt Country band. Now I won’t lie, I saw the name Drag The River and decided to see what they sounded like based on that. You gotta respect a good name.
The first CD I listened to was You Can’t Live This Way and it’s opening track “Death of the Life of the Party”. I immediately liked the song and had vague recollections of the same feelings described in the song. Sadly, the song’s ominous conclusion turns out to be a fitting swan song for Drag The River. It seems this will be their last CD. The years of relentless touring and doing things their own way have taken a toll. To the die hard DTR fans out, I say keep hope alive.
It seems the good times lasted a life time
It’s too late to turn around
So drink up, let’s party down
Dance with the girls that make us feel young again
And pray that this song never ends
You Can’t Live This Way falls into the same feel of music I have been drawn to lately. Wonderful lyrics, plenty of acoustic instruments, and vocals that might not win American Idol but give you goose bumps instead. There are a couple of odd arangement moments. About 25 seconds into the wonderful “W.W. Too” is a completely out of place guitar moment that makes me look at my Rhapsody player wondering if I got booted and it went to the next song. These guys are smart though and have been doing this a long time so I am gonna give them the benefit of the doubt and I bet there is a hidden meaning to that.
“Tobacco Fields” is another of my favorites from this CD. It is a very powerful lyrical bartender that will sit three fingers of whiskey down in front of you before letting you hear it. I can only guess at the pain that forged it but I think we all bleed with it.
Your blue eyes couldn’t keep the anger hidden
Is my love for you forgiven
It’s been raining for years
walking barefoot through tobacco fields
mud felt good between your toes
There is obviously a lot of emotions being released on You Can’t Live This Way. It feels like a cleansing CD that just might allow a reunion one day.
Super Random Delicious Shuffle Challenge 2
I enjoyed the ruskie roulette style randomness of the shuffle challenge so here is round two. Please don’t find my Scarlett Johansson tracks. I mean seriously why didn’t she make a sex tape like any other attention craved starlet. Press Play……
Alice in Chains – “Over Now (Unplugged Version)”
Outstanding, I haven’t listened to any AiC in a while but I have certainly put some burn marks on their discs over the years. They are my favorite band from the grunge era and produced a lot of great tracks before Layne Staley died. His death reminds of a bit from Denis Leary asking how come only the good musicians die when you could lock Motley Crew in a room with all the drugs in the world and they would come out with new double length live album. Anyway, the track is the acoustic version from the unplugged series which turned out awesome. The lyrics have a redemption and resolution theme and the line that wraps it up for me is, “we pay our debt sometime” which is repeated often throughout the track. Another verse that I like a lot says “When it’s all gone wrong, it’s hard to be so strong”. This was why I said that I thought of redemption since it indicates contriteness rather than an attitude of letting passing time absolve a crisis.
10 Kickass Youtube Videos
We have expanded on our 10 Kickass Youtube Video idea and added it to the sidebar. I just finished adding my first 10 to the list. Now to give you some background, this isn’t a best of list. The only criteria is a good fucking live song on Youtube.
That means the list is highly debatable and very subjective. I don’t think you will have too look to close at the list I put up tonight to figure out I was in a dark aggressive mood.
Antimatter will love the Oasis song and Salviad will love the Pink Floyd and Neil Diamond songs but I love them all. This list is gonna change often so send us your favorite live youtube performances. Make sure they are live. You can email us here. One last thing. Make sure the sound and video are decent quality. None of us want to hear our favorite song recorded from a cell phone in the upper deck.
Artic Monkeys – “Favorite Worst Nightmare”
This is an excellent album that I have had for a while although I haven’t really listened to it much yet. For some unknown reason, I tend to buy like ten albums at one so a lot of times something gets lost in the shuffle. Well, this morning I was looking for something to listen to and decided on this album. I don’t remember where I heard about the band but I’m thinking I saw them perform at Glastonbury. Usually when I first listen to an album, the first thing that I pay attention to is the music to see if it interests me or not. Then I start to notice the lyrics more and more and usually a song will have like a great line or chorus that I catch onto so I will start to play that track over and over and listen more closely.
I know the music is in my wheelhouse so I’m ready to put a little more of the puzzle together. To do something a little bit different in this post since I have just really started paying attention to this album, I’m going to pick one line from each track that initially stands out. Also, I am going to resist the urge to look up the lyrics so if I am wrong here then that will just be a part of the process.
