Drag The River
Drag The River is what Wicked Playlist is about. Finding good new music that you may not have ever heard before. I had never head them. I just happened across the self-described Alt Country band. Now I won’t lie, I saw the name Drag The River and decided to see what they sounded like based on that. You gotta respect a good name.
The first CD I listened to was You Can’t Live This Way and it’s opening track “Death of the Life of the Party”. I immediately liked the song and had vague recollections of the same feelings described in the song. Sadly, the song’s ominous conclusion turns out to be a fitting swan song for Drag The River. It seems this will be their last CD. The years of relentless touring and doing things their own way have taken a toll. To the die hard DTR fans out, I say keep hope alive.
It seems the good times lasted a life time
It’s too late to turn around
So drink up, let’s party down
Dance with the girls that make us feel young again
And pray that this song never ends
You Can’t Live This Way falls into the same feel of music I have been drawn to lately. Wonderful lyrics, plenty of acoustic instruments, and vocals that might not win American Idol but give you goose bumps instead. There are a couple of odd arangement moments. About 25 seconds into the wonderful “W.W. Too” is a completely out of place guitar moment that makes me look at my Rhapsody player wondering if I got booted and it went to the next song. These guys are smart though and have been doing this a long time so I am gonna give them the benefit of the doubt and I bet there is a hidden meaning to that.
“Tobacco Fields” is another of my favorites from this CD. It is a very powerful lyrical bartender that will sit three fingers of whiskey down in front of you before letting you hear it. I can only guess at the pain that forged it but I think we all bleed with it.
Your blue eyes couldn’t keep the anger hidden
Is my love for you forgiven
It’s been raining for years
walking barefoot through tobacco fields
mud felt good between your toes
There is obviously a lot of emotions being released on You Can’t Live This Way. It feels like a cleansing CD that just might allow a reunion one day.
