All The Lost Souls by James Blunt
I received a copy of James Blunt’s second CD “All The Lost Souls” this week and I am very pleased to report he didn’t fall into the sophomore slump. Wonderful CD with some excellent songs on it. 1973 is the first release from it and it lives up to the title. The music from the song transports you to a disco back in the 70’s. Being born in 1973, I feel an odd connection with the song. That may be contributing to my enjoyment of the song and relating to it’s lyrical memories of growing up and growing old.
As much as I like 1973 it isn’t my favorite on the CD. Neither is the haunting Annie or Same Mistake which has one of the best lines I remember in recent years. “Give me reason but don’t give me choice because I’ll just make the same mistake again”, that just makes me flinch at the truth and emotion behind it. Phenomenal lyrics and you will find many more like it on the All The Lost Souls cd. Blunt is a wonderful lyricist.
My favorite from the CD is a song titled Shine On. The beauty of that song surpasses my ability as a wordsmith to accurately describe it. The lyrics are powerful, yet they allow you to apply themselves to more than one meaning. I’ll leave you with my favorite. “Their all just slaves to the Gods they’ve made but you and I just shone, just shone”.
